Five card draw is a poker format you can learn in one sitting: five private cards, one chance to change some of them, and a showdown. This page walks through each stage in order, from the ante to the draw to the final comparison. It is one of ten games on the other games on the table games list.
Play five card draw in five steps
- Every player posts the ante, the same small stake, into the pot.
- The dealer gives each player five cards face down.
- A betting round starts left of the dealer. You may check, bet, call, raise or fold.
- Each player still in discards up to three cards and takes the same number from the deck.
- A second betting round follows, and then players show their hands. The best five-card hand wins.
An example with a ₱100 ante at a four-player table: the pot starts at ₱400. If one player bets ₱200 in the first round and two call, the pot reaches ₱1,000 before the draw. The ₱100 ante is a round figure chosen for this example.
The hands that win at the showdown
Hands rank as in all poker games, from weakest to strongest.
| Rank | Hand | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | High card | A K 9 6 3, no pair |
| 2 | One pair | Two 8s |
| 3 | Two pair | Kings and fours |
| 4 | Three of a kind | Three 7s |
| 5 | Straight | 5 6 7 8 9 |
| 6 | Flush | Five cards of one suit |
| 7 | Full house | Three 9s and two 4s |
| 8 | Four of a kind | Four queens |
| 9 | Straight flush | 4 5 6 7 8 of hearts |
The number of different five-card hands in a 52-card deck is C(52,5) = 2,598,960, which is why a plain pair is common and a straight flush is rare.
Deciding which cards to draw
Your draw is the one real decision besides betting. Use these defaults as a starting point, then adapt to the table.
- Hold a made hand such as a straight or flush and draw nothing.
- Hold three of a kind and draw two cards.
- Hold a pair and draw three cards.
- Hold four cards to a flush or straight and draw one.
- Hold nothing worth keeping and draw up to the table’s limit.
Drawing is information, because everyone sees how many cards you take. A player who draws one card is probably chasing a flush, a straight or two pair.
Common draw mistakes
Drawing to a single high card instead of keeping a pair
Keep the pair and draw three. A pair already beats every hand with no pair.
Betting big before the draw with nothing
Check or fold. The first round happens before anyone has improved, so a weak hand needs the draw first.
Five card draw versus other games on the table
Five card draw has no shared cards and no blinds, so it plays slower than hold em. Games against a dealer, such as the pontoon card game rules compared with blackjack, use fixed rules the dealer follows. A dice game like sic bo strategy for dice tables has no hands to build at all.
| Game | Opponent | Deck use |
|---|---|---|
| Five card draw | Other players | Five private cards, one draw |
| Pontoon | The dealer | Cards added by twisting |
| Sic bo | The dice result | Three dice, no cards |
If a lobby tile lists a draw poker game, open its rules screen and read the paytable and how many cards you may change.
