Gamefowl: what the word means
A gamefowl is a fowl kept for cockfighting. The male bird is a gamecock, and the Cockfighting Law of 1974 calls the birds in a match fighting cocks and gamecocks. The law also names the people around them, among them the gaffer, who arms the cock, and the referee, or sentenciador.
| Word | Plain meaning |
|---|---|
| Gamefowl | A fowl kept for cockfighting |
| Gamecock | The male gamefowl; PD 449 uses the word in its definition of a bet taker |
| Fighting cock | The decree’s own term for the bird in a match |
| Sabungero | A person who follows or takes part in sabong |
Fighting cock breeds: bloodline names
Searches for fighting cock breeds mostly turn up bloodline names. A bloodline is a family of gamefowl that breeders refer to by a name. The four below are the ones readers ask about most, and each is a name of a bloodline traced to American breeders.
| Bloodline name | What it is |
|---|---|
| Sweater | A bloodline name breeders use, traced to American breeders |
| Kelso | A bloodline name breeders use, traced to American breeders |
| Roundhead | A bloodline name breeders use, traced to American breeders |
| Hatch | A bloodline name breeders use, traced to American breeders |
Sweater gamefowl and Kelso gamefowl: reading the names
| Phrase | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Sweater gamefowl | A gamefowl of the bloodline named Sweater |
| Kelso gamefowl | A gamefowl of the bloodline named Kelso |
Sweater gamefowl
Sweater gamefowl means a gamefowl of the bloodline called Sweater. When someone says a bird is a Sweater, they are naming the bloodline, in the way a dog owner names a kennel line.
Kelso gamefowl
Kelso gamefowl works the same way: Kelso is the bloodline name. A name tells you which family the bird is said to come from. It tells you nothing about a particular bird.
Where the names meet the law
A name has no standing in PD 449. The decree regulates cockpits, officials and the days cockfights may be held, not breeds, and it says nothing of bloodlines.
- Read PD 449 Section 4 for the legal terms: cockfighting, bet taker, gaffer, referee and bettor.
- Read the parehas meaning at the cockpit for the odds calls a bet taker uses.
- Read the talpak betting call explained for the call to place a bet.
