A reference number is the code your bank attaches to one transfer, and it is the line support asks for first when a payment goes missing. It sits on the confirmation your bank shows after you pay, part of the same fund transfer route you follow from the cashier. This page shows where it hides, what it is called, and how to hand it over.
Reference number: where it appears
A transfer leaves the same number in several places, so you can recover it even after closing the first screen. The last column shows the job each place does.
| Place | What you see | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmation screen | Shown right after the payment | Copy or screenshot at once |
| Transaction history | The transfer’s own entry in your bank’s app | Recover a number you missed |
| Bank notice | A text or email, if your bank sends one | Second copy |
| Statement line | The entry on your monthly statement | Last resort, days later |
Transaction reference number: the label changes by bank
Banks do not agree on one word. You may see reference number, confirmation number, transaction number or a similar label beside a code of letters and digits. This site quotes no bank’s number length or label, so open your own bank’s transfer receipt and match the code that sits beside one of those words.
| Label you may see | Is it the reference number? |
|---|---|
| Reference number or confirmation number | Yes |
| Transaction number | Yes, if it sits on the confirmation and history entry |
| Account number | No, it names your account for every transfer |
| Mobile number | No |
When a receipt shows more than one code, the one that appears on both the confirmation screen and the history entry is the one to send. Account numbers and phone numbers are not reference numbers.
Bank transfer reference number: what support does with it
The lobby’s How to Deposit page says a deposit is added to your account once the payment is successful. When a balance lags, Live Chat has to find one payment among many, and the reference number identifies it.
Send these together in one message:
- The reference number, copied as text rather than retyped.
- The amount you paid.
- The date and time on the receipt.
- A screenshot of the confirmation, so the number can be checked against the picture.
Timing matters too. A payment sent late in the day can wait for the next banking day, so read the BPI cut-off time pattern before assuming something went wrong.
Reference number problems and fixes
You cannot find a reference number on the receipt
Open the transfer’s entry in your bank’s transaction history and scan every line for a code beside the word reference, confirmation or transaction. If your bank shows none, send the date, time, amount and both accounts instead.
Your bank page paused or failed before showing a receipt
No receipt means the transfer may not have gone through. Check your bank’s history, and see how BPI maintenance can pause a transfer before you pay again.
You typed the number by hand and support cannot match it
Copy and paste it, or send the screenshot. Letters such as O and 0 or I and 1 are easy to swap when typing.

FAQ
What is a reference number on a bank transfer?
It is the identifier your bank assigns to one transfer, usually made of letters and digits. Two payments of the same amount on the same day still carry different reference numbers.
Where do I find my bank's reference number?
Look on the confirmation screen right after you pay, then in the transaction history entry for that transfer. The label differs by bank, so open your own bank's receipt and look for words such as reference, confirmation or transaction number.
Bakit hinihingi ng support yung reference number?
Kasi iyon ang nagtuturo sa eksaktong transfer mo sa dami ng payments. Send it with the amount and the time you paid so Live Chat can trace the payment without asking twice.
Is the reference number the same as my account number?
No. Your account number identifies your bank account for every transfer, while the reference number identifies a single transfer. Do not paste one in place of the other.
